Will Hegleris a Lowcountry artist whose work stands apart. His unique art combines a familiarity with the local landscape and its wildlife with an original approach to oil painting. A former marine biologist and a lifelong resident of the Isle of Palms and Mount Pleasant, the subject matter of his work has been the backdrop of his life. His paintings are instantly recognizable and remembered by all who see them. This creative style of painting that he calls "cell painting" is self taught. It is inspired by the fragmented color found in Byzantine mosaics, Louis Comfort Tiffany's stained glass work, and pointillism. It continues to evolve with each new piece.
The resulting works in this style are incredibly intricate with great visual interest, often described by the casual observer and serious collector alike as "unlike anything I've seen before". His work is characterized by exquisitely detailed paintings in which individual "cells of color" are isolated with intricate line work- a refreshingly creative and original perspective. His work has taken honors in local arts festivals, been honored as the 2003 Cooper River Bridge Run design and 2004 North Charleston Arts Festival design, as well as been discovered by discriminating collectors throughout the southeast and beyond. The painting "Toys of the Wind and Tide" was awarded Third Place overall in the 2007 Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit.
Will believes his gift is his creativity, an ability to look at a subject from a different perspective and see more than others do. He views each painting as an adventure and an opportunity to grow and learn something new. He credits his success to God, a supportive family and friends, hard work, and perseverance. Will lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC with his wife Larkin, daughter Mary Larkin, and son Clayton. He works from his home studio.
